— Byakuya to Zommari Rureaux[1]

Byakuya Kuchiki (朽木 白哉, Kuchiki Byakuya) is the presiding 6th Division Captain of the Gotei 13. He serves as the 28th head of the Kuchiki Family, one of Soul Society's Four Great Noble Families, and succeeded his grandfather Ginrei Kuchiki in both positions. His Lieutenant is Renji Abarai.

Byakuya's prideful and dedicated nature would lead to him becoming an antagonistic force against Ichigo Kurosaki during his bid to save Rukia Kuchiki; later, however, Byakuya would become a firm ally of Ichigo's.

Byakuya following the Winter War.

Byakuya is a tall, lean man with grey eyes and black hair that reaches his upper back. He keeps his hair tidy with hairpieces known as kenseikan at the front of his head.[2] These hairpieces signify his position as head of the Kuchiki Family.[3] His attire consists of the standard captain uniform, including the Shinigami's shihakushō and white haori emblazoned with the 6th Division insignia. Unlike other captains, Byakuya's haori has an upright collar, with gold edges featured along the entire haori, as well as gold tassels hanging from his collar. During the invasion of the Quincy, Byakuya did not wear kenseikan hairpieces at the front of his head, but normal hairpieces at the back of his head.[4]

Prior to the invasion by the Quincy, Byakuya had two additional kenseikan on the right side of his head. In addition to the standard captain's uniform, Byakuya wore a white scarf made by master weaver Tsujishirō Kuroemon III. This white scarf is made from the "Ginpaku Kazahana no Uzuginu" (銀白風花の紗, Silvery-White Windflower Silk), and it is said to be worth ten mansions in the Seireitei.[5]

Shinigami Agent Arc

Renji and Byakuya depart for the Material World.

Byakuya along with Renji Abarai are departing to the Material World with a Hell Butterfly on orders to capture or kill Rukia Kuchiki. Renji comments that the job is not for a Shinigami and Byakuya replies that it could be. Later that day, Renji and Byakuya find Rukia running away, while they are standing on the sky.[6]

Renji quickly confronts Rukia and berates her for losing her edge after having her powers stolen, remarking that she shouldn't have a human expression while asking for confirmation from Byakuya, who he refers to as captain. Byakuya appears behind Rukia and acknowledges her by name, and then continues to observe the situation while Renji is threatening Rukia, before being intercepted by Uryū Ishida.[7]

After Renji defeats Uryū and is confronted by Ichigo Kurosaki, Byakuya continues to stay still and observe the events unfolding before him, but makes note of Ichigo's name as the two men begin their fight. When Ichigo manages to land a scratch on Renji after he let his guard down, Byakuya pointed out that Ichigo is correct in this situation. He then tells Renji that he has seen Ichigo somewhere, and remembers that the Onmitsukidō posted an image-only report thirty-three hours ago of a Menos Grande being driven back to Hueco Mundo by a sword wound. Renji laughs in disbelief, while Byakuya attempts to address him again. After Renji releases his Zanpakutō's Shikai and mortally wounds Ichigo, Byakuya observes the fight with a grim expression.[8]

Byakuya observes Ichigo's sudden spike in reiatsu following his near-death state. As Ichigo begins to overpower Renji and attempts to land a critical hit on the lieutenant, Byakuya intervenes and cuts through Ichigo's zanpakutō without either combatant being able to trace his movements. As Ichigo understands that Byakuya was the person who cut his sword, Byakuya drops the blade in his hand and lands an attack on Ichigo instantly.[9]

Byakuya defeating Ichigo.

Ichigo, unable to process the attack, begins falling on the ground, and Byakuya comments that even while falling he is slow. Renji observes the exchange, and comments on Byakuya's ability. Byakuya and Renji share a few words regarding, with Renji mentally noting the captain's power. As Rukia tries to save Ichigo's life, Byakuya observes his younger sister and lieutenant argue. While Rukia explains her reasoning, Byakuya questions why she must approach Ichigo even though it would add to her sentence. Before Rukia can say anything in defense, Byakuya subsequently mentions that Ichigo looks very much like a certain individual (later confirmed to be Kaien Shiba). Before he can continue, Ichigo grips Byakuya's leg in desperation. As Byakuya threatens Ichigo's audacity, Rukia kicks Ichigo's arm away from Byakuya and declares her intention to leave with the Shinigami, all while Byakuya silently observes the situation. Upon hearing her decision, Byakuya mentions that Ichigo's Saketsu and Hakusui have been shattered, and even if he survives, he will have no more power left. He orders Renji to open a Senkaimon to Soul Society, and leaves the Material World with Rukia in tow.[10]

Back in Soul Society, Byakuya is seen departing from an unnamed building.[11] Byakuya later appears at Rukia's jail cell, announcing her crimes and her sentence, before stating this will be the last time he speaks with her before the gallows, leaving the cell. As he walks across unknown barracks, he is encountered by captains Gin Ichimaru and Kenpachi Zaraki. Gin comments on Rukia's execution, expecting Byakuya to be sad, though Byakuya retorts that it has nothing to do with them. Zaraki comments on the nature of noble families, to which Byakuya and the 11th Division captain exchange provocations before Gin ties up Zaraki and whisks him away. Byakuya wears a solemn expression, and begins walking away from the area.[12]

Powers & Abilities

Spiritual Power: Byakuya, as a Captain, possesses a high level of spiritual power. When his spiritual power is released, the pressure was overwhelming enough to force Ganju Shiba and Hanatarō Yamada to sweat and shake in his presence. The Shiba clansman himself admitted that Byakuya is the greatest head of the Kuchiki Family and surmised that he has spiritual pressure at least on-par with Kenpachi Zaraki (albeit with his eye-patch on). To this end, even from a considerable distance, his spiritual pressure is distinctly recognizable.[13] Following his recovery by the Royal Guard, Byakuya defeated three Sternritter, while fighting five simultaneously, with little effort, despite each Sternritter wielding Captain-class spiritual power.[14] His spiritual pressure is also powerful enough to resist external powers manipulating his body, even when those powers come from captain-class opposition.[15][16] When manifested physically, his spiritual pressure is colored white.[17]
